about bill hart

I am an artist and lecturer in E(lectronic) Media at the Tasmanian School of Art at the University of Tasmania.  I make prints, software art and immersive installations.

At the School of Art I teach a variety of courses related to production, animation, interactivity and design, but I'm also interested in the more general pedagogy of quality undergraduate education and assessment in the visual arts.

A completely rewritten version of the words of art project.  This took some time, I initially tried hacking the Crogai c++ classes, but in the end decided to rewrite from scratch.  The issue with flocking algorithms is that they are an N * N problem.  A flock size of 20 requires 400 interactions between members, 400 members requires 160,000.  The solution is to partition the space the entities are in and limit the maximum flock size.

Sticky Fingers

Sticky FingersSticky Fingers 1997 (75 x 100 cm) was the Grand Prize Winner at the 4th Sapporo International Print Bienniale.

In this image I refined a simple technique of "screening" in photoshop, where a full size grayscale "screen" image is developed to construct the surface texture for the final bitmap image. By working with bitmaps the placement of every dot of ink on the print can be controlled. A digital analogue of the Mezzotint process.

About this Site

This site is built using drupal, an open source content management system (CMS).  Originally I set this site up primarilily to act as a journal for my PhD candidature, as a place to document ideas and projects as they develop.  After completing my PhD this site has had a bit of a hiatus, but after an upgrade and reorganisation I intend to keep using it as a documentation space, rather than as a presentation folio.

Drupal is a complex tool to use for a personal website, but most likely if you have a problem with this website, its because of my CSS hacking.

There is a lot of video content on this site.  It should stream if you have a relatively fast connection ADSL 512 or better.  Some high resolution work requires an even faster connection.  It is all encoded in mpeg 4 containers using a H264 codec.  It should all play via flash and flowplayer, but because it is based on standards it should play directly other standards compliant software (such as mplayer or vlc ).

For the flash content, flash player 7 or newer should be sufficient.

All content provided, source code and media remains copyright by me, the only restriction I make is that it can't be publcly shown without my permission.
